糖伯府 Snowman Dessert House

tongpakfu
糖伯府 Tong Pak Fu Snowman Dessert house in Penang@Cantoment Road operating not more than 2 months from today, is the first branch in penang island, located opposite Pos Malaysia and Maybank at Pulau Tikus. (It is a well-known dessert house at Raja Uda). During our visit, the dessert house was packed, we even saw some patrons waiting at the front door for seats.

Snowman dessert offers a wide variety of hong-kong based dessert to their customers. I was undecided when browsing through the menu, as most of them are attractive and nicely presented. They serve chocolate fondue, fruit based desserts (mango, kiwi, strawberry, grape, sago, qq jelly), conventional desserts with extra toppings (red bean, soya bean, tau fu fah, rice dumplings, ice crems etc), plus they serve dessert with Bird nests, Hasma etc. Besides desserts, there are also some snacks available for those who need to fill their little tummy.

Since we just had our dinner, we settled for something light and refreshing, as shown below. They were yummy indeed, the fruit used was fresh and it smells great. The only drawback is the dessert served here are slightly over-priced.

Rock Melon QQ Jelly RM5.80, the ice blended is smooth and fruit is fresh and sweet, do take note that the QQ jelly is sour rather than sweet. Too bad they only have a few melon cubes included in the servings.

Mango Sago 西米露, not as sweet as the rock melon QQ jelly servings, the base has a thick mango flavor, the mango pieces was sweet though :) , however some minor imperfection where some of the sago was frozen while some was just right.

Do give it a try if you haven’t done so, overall their dessert quality is pretty good. Although I the dessert served was satisfying plus I’m pretty much a dessert lover(which girl doesn’t like desserts?) but because the price is on the high side, this would not be a place I would visit that often, but would definitely be one of the places that I would re-visit in the future.

My new Hair Style – SPA perm by HAIR ICON Queensbay Mall

Finally, decided to change a new look – yeah…. I’ve got my hair perm! After the bad experience in having curls years back, this is my second time going for perms, personally do love silky smooth ionic rebonding ( straight hair) rather than curls, simply because it looks simple, innocent, stylish, easy to care etc. Yet, due to my thin hair, I’ve opt for curling it to have the increase volume look! Well ya, this thought dint come to mind until a deal from ilovediscount which cost me RM99, for a complete hair solution including – Hair Cut + Wash + Spa Perm + Treatment + Blow.

Nowadays, more and more people & business are trending to the “groupon” concept, promoting their business online, opening up their customers database and allowing customers to purchase great deals online. What your take on the “groupon” concept selling?

This is the discount I’ve purchase:

http://www.ilovediscounts.my/penang/as-studio-hair-icon/hair-icon-perm-cut-wash-blow-treatment-or-3-hair-treatments/

It took around 2 hours to complete my hair makeover, and Ta Da!! This is my new look! :)

Well i know it will look alot better if I’ve colored my hair…. but I’m still thinking if I should color it or not since it will damage my hair even further which I strongly do not wish to do. On top on the the ilovediscounts offer, during my visit at the store I’ve spend another RM99 for 3 hair treatment + 1 scalp treatment session. Besides giving my hair some treatment it deserves, I’m also planning to arrange the treatment session on the same day I have to attend my friend’s or relative’s wedding diner/ceremony!  That way I get to kill two birds at one stone!

Overall, for the price of RM99, I’m satisfied with their service, especially since my hair length is long, and without any coupon I wont be able to enjoy such deal. Secondly, the staff was friendly, (although they are not so time effective while I was enjoying their service >.< ). Thirdly, the outcome of my curls was not bad, lots better than my last permanent hair perm. and Lastly, besides my family, all my friends commented my new hair style isn’t that bad…. though i need to add some spice (color) to make it look great. :)

Overall, I’m satisfied with their service. Would definitely visit them again if there are good deals to offer. okay…I know…. I’m more of a deal person.

The Romantic City – Paris

Paris is a magnificent city to visit, it has a mixture of the modern architecture, some historical sites plus some greenery too. Thumbs up!

The Sacre Coeur Basilica

There are a lot of gypsy in front of the Basilica, all the way up. Some are selling some hand bracelet made on the spot, while some others are selling little souvenirs like miniature  Eiffel tower key chains. Try not to be rude with them even though you are not interested in the service they are providing, else you might get into trouble. You can actually bargain with them on the price of the little souvenirs. I’m not sure about the quality but the Eiffel Tower Key chains sold here are cheaper from the ones at souvenirs shop, especially if you bargain.

The Louvre Museum

The Louvre, was originally a palace but now it is one of the largest and most visited museums in the world. This place is a must-visit for anyone with a slight interest in art. Some of the museum’s most famous works of art are the Mona Lisa and the Venus of Milo. The main entrance of the Museum is from the transparent pyramid. This glass pyramid allows natural sunlight into the underground floor. The Museum is huge, so do plan your trip well.

Eiffel Tower

Well, this is the no.1 place everyone re-call when Paris is mention. What a beautiful architecture this is! You can actually go up to the top of the Eiffel tower to enjoy the City view ( and the strong wind). There are a few options when u purchase you tickets, you can get the tickets by stairs (Gosh! that will definitely be tiring!), or by Elevator. You can also choose if you would like to go to the top of the tower or just the second floor observatory. If you are not in a hurry, do stay back till night time to watch the tower glow. During summer, the tower only lights up around 9pm, when the day turns dark, plan well if you would to have a night view of this romantic tower.

After all the visiting, its SHOPPING time! :) Personally I felt that LV  the most visited boutique in Paris, especially to those tourist from China. I’ve witness a terribly long queue in front of the LV main boutique along the famous Avenue des Champs-Élysées. And to avoid the human jam I’ve opt to do my shopping at the LV boutique at one of the alleys. Good thing to know of it! While I was walking by the street there was two Chinese lady (From China), who approach me to help them purchase some LV bags. They commented that the promoter refuse to sell them their LV handbag as they bought too many already. She then handed me over 3000euro and told me to buy whichever I prefer, of cause she did told me a few designs that would be a good choice. We went into the boutique and shop for some bags, when we want to make the payment, we were told that they do not accept CASH today! Surprised? Yes, indeed! All my life I only know there are shops that does not accept credit card etc, but never have I encounter shops that does not accept cash. Without much thought, I ask the salesperson why is cash not accepted? and they told us that they do not accept cash as   they got to know that there are fake notes around, plus there is two girls outside the street that is trying to purchase their bags in bulk. Many question pop in my mind, as in are the 3000euro in my pocket fake notes? if its due to fake notes, shouldn’t the boutique just scan through every note that they accept and ask for the cops assistance in case of money laundering instead of not accepting cash? It probably a good idea just to get our bags by credit card and then return the possibly fake $ back to the ladies waiter at the corner of street, and we did just that.

Summary of Tips:

1) If you happen to bump into people who ask your help to purchase bags, don’t do it. You might get into trouble , and being accuse of money laundering. Always be alert!

2) Plan your destination well, Train tickets can be bought in bulk which is cheaper than buying them separately. For example, the subway ticket cost 1.75euro one-way, but when bought in bulk of 12 tickets, it cost 1.25euro one-way.

3) Stay away from the gypsy, if you can’t since they are everywhere as usual, try not to provoke them as they might not be as welcoming as you thought.

4) Plan your trip well if you need to get souvenirs, most shops close early, and there isn’t much to buy from the airport. (unlike in KLIA)., even shops in the airport close by 8pm.

5) Identify the malls/boutiques you would like to do your shopping in advance. Have some buffer on your shopping time too! you’ll never know how long the queue will end up to be like. Thus, it always good to know some alternative boutique nearby, sometimes they do have two same boutiques walking distance away!

Out and About in Switzerland

I love Switzerland despite that everything is much more costly there as it is a very beautiful and clean country. You’ll be able to see greenery all over Switzerland, even the cities in Switzerland. During my stay, I’ve visited GENEVA, WENGEN, INTERLAKEN and Swiss Alps – Jungfrough.

The Capital of Switzerland: Geneva

The mountain view from Wengen, which is about 1200m above sea level.

The Swiss Alps: Photo taken from Jungfrau Top of Europe, isn’t it gorgeous?

Summary of Tips :

1) When searching for accommodation, try to find those that are convenient for your travel destination. Check with the hotel/hostel in-charge person to understand further if they provide free breakfast and free transportation. There are a lot of hotel/hostels in Switzerland which provide free public transportation service to their customers, thus make sure you utilize them.

2) Save on buying a map, you do not need to. Tourist info center are available at certain designated place. Do check the city map by the road side for their location. They have very helpful staff in the counter, and you can get lots of info on budget travelling, tips, free maps etc from them.

3) Always ask for special tickets when travelling around. For Example the normal return ticket of Jungfraubanh – Train to Jungfraujoch, cost about 189 euro, while special tickets, such as good morning ticket/good afternoon ticket cost around 145euro. Spend some time to plan your travel destination to save on transportation cost.

4) Check the weather forecast before planning your trip to Alps, such as Jungfraujoch. You won’t want to spend hundred over euros up to the top of the Alps and not able to enjoy the magnificent view due to the cloudy weather.

All about Italy

I’ve visited a few cities in Italy during my last vacation. MILAN, VENICE and ROME. Overall it is a beautiful country with a lot of historical artifacts. Italy is famous and no doubt attracted tourist from all over the world. Though I didn’t enjoyed Italy as much as other countries I’ve visited from my last trip, it was a great experience being able to step foot into this country and cities. Here are some of the tips/guides/experience that I would like to share with all of you:

Duomo – Milan, my first stop in Italy. This Cathedral is one of the most famous ones in Milan, and it is always full of tourists. The view is spectacular indeed, but what more important to take note are the gypsy that are in front of Duomo throwing out corns on your palm without your consent. We actually saw a Chinese couple (from China) being bullied/con by the gypsy. While we were happily taking photos in front of the lovely cathedral, we witness a Chinese couple who wasn’t aware of the scandal they are lead into when they accepted the dried corns, and were taking with the pigeon at their hands. After the photo shooting, we overhead that the corn-man requested for 20euro for his service. I was shocked! how could a handful of corns + his service of 5mins cost 20euro? This was ridiculous. There was a struggle, finally the Chinese couple had to gave in, as that men bravely snatch over 20 euros from them.

Lesson learnt:

Never, never, never accept anything/any service from anyone you don’t personally know when u are in Italy.

After we completed our MILAN venture, we took Eurorail to Venice – Italy’s romantic city. The view was superb. :) A city surrounded by water with gondolas/boats all around venice. Nice nice….

A gondola ride cost 90euro during my visit and we dint opt for it, since it was over our budget. During our stay in Venice, we’ve stayed in leonardo hotel.. We experience pretty bad service there, the hostel stated that they accept credit card (from online webpage), but in actual fact they will not accept it for the complete payment (even-though they have a credit card machine readily available.), even the personnel in-charge was rude in treating their guest. This cause us to be short in cash, as we thought we could settle the payment through credit card initially. Since the weather is still warm in venice, we have a hard time sleeping due to the non-working fan that was provided and air condition rooms which is not available.

Lesson learnt:

Even though the hotel stated they accept credit card, always email them in advance if they really do accept credit card for the remaining payment. If you are travelling to venice in the summer, always check if they provide air-condition room.

Next Stop: Rome

Days later, we head over to the no.1 well known city in Italy, ROME. :)

There were tourist everywhere! :) and due to the fact that there are so many historical sites in ROME, there is only 2 main line of subway available. We were inform by one of the locals that subway upgrades are often abundant halfway due to the historical artifact that was found during the construction, and not long after that site was turn into a museum instead. In ROME, the easiest mode of transport is your very own no.11 transport, thus its very important that you have a pair of comfortable shoes with you.

There are so many historical sites to visit in ROME that you will need many days to just visit them. Not to mention that you would like to visit the world’s smallest country – Vatican City which is also located inside ROME, and visit this small city/country by itself will take a full-day. For those catholic friends visiting, you might want to check out if the pope is in before planning your trip. I was not able to meet the pope in person while I was there, as he was in Spain that time.

While we were travelling in ROME, there was another terrible incident which happened while we were taking the subway. As usual the subway was crowded and we had to squeeze ourselves into the train to let more passengers board. Taking advantage of the crowd in the train, the famous Italian pick pockets strike again, just in front of us! during one of the stops, the pick pocket pop a wallet out from a tourist back pocket and jump out of the train when the door was closing! It all happen too quickly that their target a Chinese couple who was standing in front of us, didn’t notice who took his wallet even until the door closed. It was a terrible lost to the couple as besides his personal identification card, credit card, bank card etc, he also lost 3200euro of cash! I wonder why is he carrying so much cash with him?

Lesson learnt:

Never put your wallet in your back pocket, especially when you are travelling in Italy.

Summary of Tips for travellers:

1) Internet service are hard to get in Italy, even in MCD the free internet access are only available to those who have a contact number. There are paid service, but they are costly too. My personal advice is, if you are backpacking and you need internet access, always try to find a hotel/hostel with free internet access to stay in.

2) Bring an umbrella and your sunglasses if you are travelling during Summer. The Sun is just too freaking HOT!

3) Keep all your belongings in a safe place. Wallets, passport etc should always be kept close with you. Never put your wallet in your back pocket. Always separate your cash into different portions and keep them separately to ensure that you have back-up cash available even though undesirable event happened.

4) Bring a empty water tumbler while travelling to avoid the need to buy mineral water for consumption. Drinking water is available all over the city at the water fountains. You can save a lot from the amount of drinking water you need at such weather. (if you are travelling in summer)

5) Do not accept any service of any kind from anyone you don’t know if you are not willing to pay for it. There are too many gypsy in Italy that even local Italians themselves hate. The cops are too corrupted in Italy too that not much could be done to prevent their not so legal activities. You can see them almost everywhere trying to earn a living by taking advantage of tourist who visit Italy. Example: When you take the subway, buy the tickets yourself if you do not want to pay additional to the gypsy who is standing by the ticket machine to help u buy the tickets. The machine does operate in English thus, don’t be fooled by them.

Homemade Cream Puff

:) My first attempt in making cream puffs. The outcome isn’t bad, but definitely there is plenty of room for improvement. It was fun & easy as compared to making quite a number of other pastries! it is messy, you do not need a mixer, and the making time isn’t that long too!

Recipe ( 30 puffs )

Filling:      500ml full cream milk                                                                                                               2 tablespoon butter                                                                                                                   1 tsp vanilla essence                                                                                                                 2 (A size) egg yolks + 1 egg                                                                                                     100gm sugar                                                                                                                             40gm of custard flour/corn flour

Combine all ingredients in a sauce pan Cook over low heat whisking till thick. Allow to cool

Puffs:        220g salted butter                                                                                                                    500ml water                                                                                                                               230gm plain flour -sifted                                                                                                          11/2 tsp vanilla essence                                                                                                             6 (A size) eggs

Cook the butter + water in saucepan until boil. Quickly stir in the flour to form a dough. Remove from heat and allow to cool. When cool add in vanilla essence and eggs, beat until dough is smooth. Pipe onto try and baked in preheated oven (200′C) for 20 mins. Allow to cool before pipe in the fillings.

For my case, I’ll need to get the piping bag to get my puffs looks better as well as ease the process of filling the puffs with the cream. The puffs were pipe from “plastic bag with a hole” while the cream where pipe from a miniature syringe (That’s why you wont be able to spot the cream insertion hole. The drawback is that the cream would be uneven + the process is slow). I’ll experiment it with other flavors next times.

The recipe is quick and easy, and all my family members enjoyed it. :) Yippy, these are going to be our breakfast tomorrow.

Soon Hiang Tau Sar Pneah

Tau Sar Pneah (also known as tambun biscuits) has been a hit in penang ever since Ghee Hiang and Him Heang became famous. Nowadays, most people who visit penang would carry home some of this penang local delicacy biscuits as gifts. :)

During my friend’s recent visit to penang, one of them suggested a homemade biscuits shop for tau sau pneah rather than our usual spot – the well known Ghee Hiang and Him Heang. According to him, this homemade recipe Tambun biscuits is much more tastier. Since I did not know the place back then, and we were on a rush, we did not manage to visit this biscuit shop.

Soon Hiang bakery is located at Jalan Kuantan, one of the road intersection along Jalan Dato Keramat. their packaging is simple and biscuits availability are limited. This house-like biscuit shop is located on your left when you turn in from Jalan Dato Keramat.

During my visit, even though there was only 1 customer besides me at the shop, there was no stock for all variety of biscuits except one last box of Tau Sar Pneah. The Auntie showed me a list of orders from her regular customers, and explain that all the biscuits are already pre-booked by their customers and requested me to call them up to make booking in the future.Happily, I bought the last box of Tambun biscuits and headed home. :) Being unable to resist the nice smell of the biscuits since it was fresh from the oven, I took a bite from it. yum yum…. it taste good indeed! Definitely better than Ghee Hiang and Him Heang as well. Maybe because I took it while it was hot? The biscuit is crispy from the outside while the Tar Sar paste melts in your mouth, plus it has a very nice aroma too! :) I simply love it! Comparably, Ghee Hiang Tambun biscuit have less aroma, the biscuits is rather hard than crispy, while the green been paste is lumpy / chunks rather than having the melts in your mouth kind of texture. Him Heang Tambun biscuits texture is more alike Soon Hiang, but in terms of the level of crispness and melts in your mouth texture, it is definitely better . (At least while its hot, it is definitely better!)

The price of one-box of Soon Hiang Tambun biscuits cost RM9 as of today. They are having simple box packaging. (not individually packed), thus might be less inconvenient than Ghee Hiang’s version.

Do give it a try if you have yet to try this penang little treasure. And if you are wondering on how to get to Jalan Kuantan, from Komtar, go along Jalan Dato Keramat (you should pass through GAMA), go straight until you pass Penang Times Square, there is a traffic light right after the traffic light, keep to your left, and turn into Jalan Kuantan. It is the second turning after Penang Times Square. Soon Hiang will be on your left.
